Artist's Statement
I am interested in the way pattern and color can create movement on the surface of a pot and in the idea of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. A piece works for me when it is visually complex, yet presents a cohesiveness whereby no single area predominates or jumps out at the viewer. The eye moves around the piece and gradually "gets it "in the same way, for example, that we hear a piece of music, and gradually understand the pattern. Being functional adds another dimension to the work. Besides serving a function in being visually engaging, I like the idea that people can use my pieces for serving or eating from or as a dynamic starting point for their flower arrangements.
